While searching for topics for this essay I knew I wanted to do something involving the government and political science. I began to research different types of jobs in political sciences and I came to my conclusion of becoming a lawyer. Specifically a constitutional lawyer. Constitutional lawyers handle cases that involve the interpretation of laws that have been enshrined by the Constitution of the United States of America. They argue cases in federal courts, and even some cases make it to the Supreme Court. Those cases may involve issues such as rights, equal protection, and privacy. Areas that constitutional lawyers need to know are legislative procedures, separation of powers, judicial review, key principles and clauses, the bill of rights, freedom of speech, rule of law, supremacy, due process, equal protection, the first amendment, and commerce clause. Those things are things you would have learned in government. Some landmark Supreme Court cases that involve constitutional law is Miranda v. Arizona (1966), Gideon v. Wainwright (1963), Brown v. Board of Education (1954), and McCulloch v. Maryland (1819). A case that some people might not know but it hits home for me is Watson v. City of Kansas City Kansas (1988). The case is about my grandmother Nancy Watson who sued the police department for violating her constitutional rights within domestic violence. Prior to 1988 police departments treated violence perpetrated by an acquaintance differently than violence perpetrated by a stranger. The victims were treated totally differently. At that time 75% of all violent crimes were domestic. That landmark decision changed the behavior of police officers to responding to all violent calls. In that behavior they established a domestic violence unit, better funding and treatment for shelters for battered women and children were treated better, established and educated domestic violence units in the police department , and the public was educated better. Doctor Shapiro of Independence established a men’s angry control group which spread throughout the country. This decision helped the family unit as a whole. It protected the rights of the victim, the proper traer, and the family unit as a whole by establishing angry control groups, shelters for battered women and children, hotlines, emergency rooms advocates, and public awareness. And it started minimizing the loss of life.

One of the great things about being a lawyer is that you have a variety of options to choose from within the public and private sectors. You could represent a person in a local community as a criminal prosecutor or you could protect innocent lives as a criminal defense attorney.  You could be a tax lawyer who understands the ins and outs of tax law and regulation and they get to work in many settings. Another option could be a business lawyer who are also known as a corporate lawyer. Business lawyers handle legal matters for businesses and ensure that all company transactions flow through the local, state, and federal government. There are many ways to find fulfillment within the profession of law.

Another advantage of being a lawyer, you meet different types of people. Being a lawyer you will meet very rich people, poor people, different ethic groups, and people of the LGBTQ+ community. With different people you have different circumstances. Those cases would never be the same and they would never be boring.
