Higher Education Reflection Essay Example

When many think of a higher education they think of its end product. They think of an individual standing in their graduation robe and mortarboard with a degree wrapped perfectly in a hollow cylinder in their hands. One does not think about what it means, one simply thinks of graduation day. But a higher education is so much more important that that. Its so much more than its graduation day or mere classroom instruction, simply, it is a journey. It is a journey to a cultivated mind that even outside the university’s doors they will continue to learn despite having a piece of paper that says they had once. For a degree is more than a mere paper of certification. It is the realization of potential and the journey of learning how to articulate our ideas and words to deliver our best in the workplace. It is a journey to advance individualism to better oneself into its best form. Hence, a higher education would prepare me for my career by preparing my mind and adapting my eccentricities for experience. 

A higher education will prepare my mind by providing new ways to learn. I will be taught to expand my ability to critically think as both an individual and as a student of a classroom. Through the wide range of opportunities I will be given, it also allows me to acquire problem-solving skills for my future profession and as a general life skill. In many instances I will be required to stretch my imagination in both oral presentations and written works. In other words, a college education will teach me to think differently. Hence, I will graduate with new improved skills in critical thinking, analytics, written and oral communication, and group-problem solving that I would not have the experience anywhere else. 

A higher education will not only provide me with the hard skills I need for my career but will also aid me in developing essential soft skills. Soft skills like, Communication, Collaboration, and Leadership will all be enhanced with the opportunities that await for me with a higher education. With the factor of diversity in people in their abilities, opinions, and beliefs, I will learn to efficiently communicate with others. This, I believe, is an important factor to have in the workplace, because if we cannot articulate our ideas into simple understanding, communication will fail and lead to an undesired workplace. Without effective and respectable communication collaboration and leadership also are to no avail. 

Lastly, A higher education will prepare me for experience. It is weird to think that our world runs on the exchanges of experiences, but the college experience will grant me the best transition into a working experience. Hence, I will be going into the workplace with solid foundational skills needed for my career. With soft skills like communication and collaboration, I will become an effective and respectable staff member and will easily adapt into the workplace. 

I am very excited to see what a higher education would have in store for me, and even though I am ecstatic about the end product, I am more eager for the journey and all the millions of things I will learn that will benefit me and stay with me for the rest of my life.
