In consideration of the uprising quarantines since the first wave of Covid 19 exerted negative influence encircling the population of Wu Han, the unfortunate virus evidently accommodated millions within the bounds of their four walls through 14 days of self confinement. Clearly, the sevre extent of this pandemic had resulted in maintaining an ordinary lifestyle from home, in order to perpetuate routines completed on a daily basis, in which, schooling is no doubt an essential need for the increasing billions of children today. This collision between an unanticipated worldwide event and the need for further exceptional education obviously led to the inclination to home schooling. However, this unforeseen situation encompasses clear drawbacks through studying behind screens, demonstrating the flaws and limitations prevented by being educated online.

First and foremost, a massive factor concluding towards why on-site learning should not be replaced by online schooling is due to the sudden acceleration of unfocused concentration and ignorant behaviour from pupils attending classes. Evidently, through communicating online, instructors teaching are restricted only towards observing students through screens, clearly limiting the amount of attentiveness pupils give, in which uncontrolled etiquettes and misconducts can be taken advantage of by learners.

Clearly, according to education writer Derek Newton from the Washington Post, the relationship between perfect grades and academic honesty had been disregarded by students, instead employing the use of digital textbooks and answers through online retailing education platforms such as Chegg, for the sake of possessing improved grades. As a student myself from an international school, acquiring more than satisfactory grades is understandable, as different curriculums may be carried out within competitive environments, especially when studying under pressure, through examinations such as the HKDSE, however, I cannot identify with. Evidently, if increased amounts of online learning is used within the future, it is completely certain that great quantities of students will begin to resort towards cheating on account of obtaining better grades.

Secondly, the approach of studying through screens disadvantages both teachers and students in regards to the decrease of interconnection and diversity provided. Unlike being bound within four walls for 7 to 8 hours a day with pages of textbooks shared through Gmail, studying within classrooms grants pupils with physical interaction, further enhancing universal learner skills such as leadership, face to face collaboration and engagement with others, increasing the amount of participation through these values. Although these skills may not be offered towards every single curriculum in existence, pupils are already inattentively developing these abilities through social interaction. 

“Studies show students with caring and supportive interpersonal relationships through school with teachers, more positive academic attitudes and values are demonstrated within lessons. These students also are more engaged academically. Emotional components of engagement include heightened levels of positive emotion during the completion of an activity, demonstrated by enthusiasm, optimism, curiosity, and interests.” (Connell et al. 262) As clearly supported through the evidence provided by The Journal Of School Health, although online learning provides an alternative solution to education, detrimental impacts in respect towards mental and physical health may be triggered without human interaction, resulting in the obvious, such as lowered self esteem, conflicted relationships or even disorders such as depression or social anxiety, establishing the advantages of being able to possess a healthy personal and social lifestyle through being able to learn on site, in lieu of online classrooms.

Lastly, one of the most vital factors as to why offline learning should not be replaced by online classes is because of the inaccessibility to the computer from third world countries and the illiterate population. I, myself, am fully aware that I am undoubtedly lucky to be able to live with loving parents in a middle class population, with paid annual fees to an international school with an open minded environment that I am forever grateful for. However, not every child is as fortunate as I am. Children and adolescents today living in poverty are at their weakest times as apart from lacking basic needs, Covid 19 has unfortunately disrupted learning across the globe, making the vulnerable undeniably twice as defenseless today.

The learning poverty crisis that existed before COVID-19 is becoming even more severe, and we are also concerned about how unequal the impact is.” (UNESCO) 

Asserted by Mamta Murthi, the World Bank Vice President of Human Development, education has become increasingly infrequent in developing countries since Covid 19, with the use of technology essentially non-existent at this point of time in low income countries. Populations lacking the amount of income to finance everyday needs are far from ever being able to purchase laptops or computers, let alone any variety of textbooks to study from, further highlighting my point of the damaging impacts to resorting to studying online. 

In conclusion, despite the fact that I fully understand why students today all resorted to online studying, I genuinely believe and stand for that in site classes are without a doubt an outmatch against online classes as through physical interaction, personal values and attributes can be easily obtained whilst being accessible and available to third world countries without likelihood or increase of cheating or deceiving teachers during examinations. Hence why I oppose online classes replacing offline learning.
