Theme of Choice in The Sun is Also a Star Essay Example

Nicola Yoon wrote, “For every event at the quantum level, the current universe splits into multiple universes. This means that for every choice you make, an infinite number of universes exist in which you made a different choice.” For Daniel and Natasha, in Nicola Yoon’s the Sun is Also a Star, the choices they make after meeting and throughout their one day relationship brings many changes to their lives. In the book The Sun is Also a Star by Nicola Yoon, the author uses symbolism and actions to reflect a poem The Road Not Taken in Natasha and Daniel’s story. 

Through the use of symbolism, the poem reflects how Natasha and Daniel’s choices shape their relationship. In the poem, Robert Frost talks about the choice that he had to make when he writes, “Two roads diverged in a wood, and I – I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.” The two roads in the poem symbolize the choices that people have to make. The decision for which road to take has caused a big change, and it reflects how the choices that Daniel and Natasha make create the same effect. When Natasha and Daniel are at a coffee shop, Daniel tells her that he can make her fall in love with him scientifically. He needs to do this by asking her questions, so he says to give him the day and she replies, “‘You can have one hour’” (Yoon 83). Natasha makes this choice even though she just met him, and has an appointment to go to. If she had not made this choice then she would not have learned about Daniel and would not have further developed their relationship. Later on, Daniel has to go to an interview for college and Natasha has an appointment. Then he does something for her and thinks, “My mother, the pacifist, would kill me dead if she knew what I’d just done. I rescheduled my interview. For…A black girl I don’t really know, who might not even like me.” (118). Daniel made the risky decision to reschedule his interview, so that he could spend more time with Natasha. This choice that he made changed the direction of their relationship, because it wouldn’t just end with them never seeing each other again. But because of his decision they were able to meet afterwards and become closer. The author uses symbolism to show how Daniel and Natasha grow closer and further develop their relationship because of the choices that they make. If they hadn’t made the choices that they did they might not have known each other like they know each other now. In the poem the symbolism is showing the choices and decisions that must be made in life. The author uses this to reflect how Daniel and Natasha’s choices made all the difference in the growth of their relationship.

Through the use of actions the author uses the poem to reflect how Natasha and Daniel have to make difficult decisions. Robert Frost starts the poem by writing, “Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could…” The roads symbolize choices and the person making them seems sorry that they couldn’t choose both. This shows the difficulty in making decisions because they are unsure of what will happen. When Daniel tells Natasha to wait outside of his parents' shop, he immediately regrets it after because it seems like he is ashamed of her. So he changes his mind and says, ‘Can I try that again?’” (134). Daniel doesn’t want Natasha to meet his family because he doesn’t want her to deal with his dad and brother's racism. But also because he doesn’t want to deal with the pressure of his parents in his relationship. The author uses this action to highlight how Daniel has a choice to make, and in the end he chooses to do the right thing instead of the easy thing. Later on when Natasha and Daniel become closer, Natasha thinks that she could love him but she doesn’t want to. She realizes that they can't be together, and stops trying to pretend, “I tug my hand from his to adjust my backpack. He waits for me to give it back but I’m not quite ready yet.” (185). Natasha wants to love Daniel and be with him, but she knows that she might get deported that very day. Through this action the author shows how Natasha knows that they can’t be together and doesn’t want to end up getting hurt. Natasha has the choice of just pretending or coming back to reality, and she chooses reality. The author uses Natasha and Daniel’s actions toward their relationship to reflect the poem in their story. This relates to how the person in the poem wanted to take both roads, and had a hard time choosing which one to take. The author also uses the poem to show how they don’t know what will happen because of their decision, but in the end they have to make a choice. She shows how Daniel and Natasha both have a hard time deciding on what they should do, but in the end they have to make a decision.

For every choice that someone makes, another choice could have been made with a different outcome. These choices are important because of the effect it has on other aspects of life. With the poem the author is able to use Natasha and Daniels actions in a way that lets us learn about them while also understanding how they had to make a difficult choice. She also uses symbolism from the poem to show that the choices that Natasha and Daniel make have a big impact on their relationship. She is also able to use the poem to reflect how Daniel and Natasha have to make difficult decisions that will affect their relationship and their lives. In the end, we learned that the choices we make, big or small, can have a huge impact on the direction of our lives.
