Most people who exist in the contemporary world have heard the name “Bill Gates.” His fame is widely accredited to his creation of the prominent computer software, Microsoft, which adheres to his ability to provide considerable philanthropic work towards causes such as global health, education, and poverty. On a grand scale, he has efficaciously impacted society with his altruistic and long-term contributions in philanthropy. Recently, Bill and his wife, Melinda, were named the most generous philanthropists in the United States by a list from The Chronicle of Philanthropy online magazine. Being the innovative idealist that he is, many could argue that Bill Gates is one of the most influential individuals of his generation.

Having been gifted with opportunities right from the beginning of his life, Bill Gates extends his good fortune towards the betterment of society.

As examined in Malcolm Gladwell’s book, Outliers: The Story of Success, Bill Gates was born in the right place at the right time. He grew up in Seattle, the hub of new technology at the time, and attended the prestigious Lakeside School, alongside Microsoft co-founder, Paul Allen. With the benefit of his family’s affluence, he had the rare opportunity to experiment in computer labs during the dawn of computer technology advancements in the late 1960’s. His incessant technology obsession and combined determination eventually led to the creation of the lucrative Microsoft Software in 1975.

Until recently, Bill Gates was termed as the richest man in the United States of America. However, Gates was surpassed by Jeff Bezos, Chief Executive Officer of Amazon, in 2018 due to a surge in the demand for online commerce. Despite ranking second on Forbes annual top four hundred list, Bill Gates still has an abundance of wealth to employ towards his philanthropic and humanitarian endeavors.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation

“...the foundation has spent over

$45 billion dollars towards advancements...”

As stated in a Business Insider article that outlines The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s largest projects, the foundation has spent over $45 billion dollars towards advancements on subjects such as global health, education, poverty since its launch in 2000. The mission statement, found on the Gates Foundation’s official website (https://www.gatesfoundation.org), shares the organization’s goals to “Fund research for new policies and financial frameworks, inspire foundation visitors to change the lives of others, and to translate scientific discoveries into solutions.” Through several partnerships with scientific groups, government leaders, businesses, and other philanthropists, The Gates Foundation has undoubtedly impacted countless lives across the entire globe.

Global Health Initiative

On the subject of global health, generous funding from the foundation has gone towards efforts to eliminate malaria, ebola, and polio, as well as several other health concerns. As Noah Kirsch points out in a Forbes article, The Gates Foundation has worked with a mosquito engineering company, Oxitec, to develop a male mosquito that would kill off future generations of malaria-transmitting insects. This development is timely due to the recent and fatal rise of the disease after decades of decline.

An additional $50 million dollars was donated to fight the Ebola virus outbreak in West Africa through other scientific partnerships. Subsequently, $38 million was spent working with a Japanese pharmaceutical company to create a low-cost polio vaccine that would be accessible to more people in developing nations. Supplementary partnership was made with a Nigeria-based company to eliminate malnutrition in Africa’s largest economy. These international projects are just a few examples that display the extent of the global outreach in which the Gates Foundation operates.

Education Initiative

Also at the forefront of The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is a heavy concentration of funds for large-scale change in the structure of public education, from kindergarten to twelfth grade. These efforts are proximate as they are based on increasing opportunity for African American, Latino, and students from low-income families in the United States. The specific goals for the Foundation include increasing high school graduation rates, enrollment in post-secondary institutions, and obtaining credentials with labor-market value. The initiatives start with the belief that for students to achieve, they first must have instructors equipped with structured lesson plans, student progress assessments, and in-school learning and leadership opportunities.

Gates envisions a public education system that also has school leadership figures that support and create an environment that empowers leadership in all areas of the school in hopes to improve students’ learning experience. The grants come into effect through partnerships with middle and high schools by searching to identify effective approaches that can be replicated in other schools. Additionally, investments are made in networks of schools to solve common problems using evidence-based interventions and data-driven approaches to support continuous learning. Teachers and leaders are ensured supplies under these interventions so they also have what they need to be successfully prepared. Meanwhile, advancements in research and development in support of new innovations are being made so that the education system can keep pace with the rapidly changing world.

Economic Mobility and Opportunity

With the experience in improving education in the United States, it came to Bill Gates’ realization that many of the greatest barriers to opportunity occur outside the classroom. The ability to access stable housing, a steady job, and a safe, healthy community in which to live are fundamental, yet beyond the reach of many people. The Gates Foundation continues its work in the United States by tackling issues that limit Americans’ ability to live productive, dignified lives. Consequently, the launch on improving economic mobility and opportunity has been backed by $158 million. One area of focus in this conquest is to close the data gap. Work has been funded to measure eviction rates for communities across the country for the first time. This data allows advocates to better allocate resources to help tenants and policy makers design policies that balance the interests of both tenants and landlords. Another important area of focus is increasing public understanding. The Gates Foundation funds comprehensive research to identify the most accurate messages about poverty and economic mobility, as well as strategies to help leaders start using more accurate narratives to effect change. These initial efforts to end poverty are influential because of the funding towards research-based approaches to solve problems.

Changing the World Through Philanthropy

An astonishing component of Bill Gates undertakings is that he is not only charitable, but also philanthropic. Charity by itself is a beneficent institution that is focused primarily on rescue and relief in a short-term, more immediate sense. Philanthropy differs because it is significantly more long-term, strategic, and focused on rebuilding. Gates and his foundation provide influential methods of amelioration for nations all over the globe because of his substantial, strategic contributions of wealth and care towards a myriad of causes. His influence goes beyond global, health, education, and poverty. Besides changing the technology world by implementing the first useful software for primitive models of computers, Bill Gates has changed the world of philanthropy with expansive and charitable enterprises.
