Vera Nazarian says: “ A woman is human. She is not better, wiser, stronger, more intelligent, more creative, or more responsible than a man. Likewise, she is never less. Equality is a given. A woman is human.” This quote represents liberal strivings to be respectful of all people. Gender inequality is the acceptance of men and women not being equal and affecting the living experience of an individual. Men were the predominant gender for a long time, and women were the minority. Fortunately, things have gradually changed over time. Women are no longer considered to be inferior and have established themselves to be equal as men.

In the 1900s, men were stronger than women. In the story “The Lottery,” by Shirley Jackson, the author states the community views women to be weaker and feebler than men. They only consider women important for being a wife and their spouses were able to mishandle them, and effectively pull them off. Men were providers and women simply stayed home and handled the housework and kids. Otherwise, the citizens of this town clearly think that men are dominant, powerful and must protect all women because they are considered weak, emotional, and unstable human beings.

Men feel they own their wives and women think that in their marriage they don't have freedom. In the “Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin, the author states a resentment for men and the way in which the world views women. It's evident when Mrs. Mallard, the main character, discovered the death of her husband, she rejoiced that she was free. She felt she could do something with her life if it wasn't for the chains of her marriage. Perhaps, it was a marriage that might not even have been her choice.

Women feel they need to marry a man with good social class to be someone in the society. Moreover, in “The Necklace,” by Guy De Maupassant, Madame Loisel, a character, is an unhappy woman with her social class, but as a woman she cannot do anything to change that position except to marry someone of a upper class. She was a desperate housewife. Women were considered a piece of property.

Gender inequality against women continues to be a global issue. Every day in their lives, women face unwanted discrimination because of their gender. Gender discrimination between men and women is a contributing factor to abuse. A good fact is that in today's society, women can venture into the world alone with a sense of security that if they fail, their gender will not play a role. Putting an end to inequalities and bridging the gap between men and women is in everyone's best interest.
