The Issue of Police Brutality Essay Example

According to the Washington Post, a little over a thousand people have died due to police brutality this year. Police brutality is an important social justice issue because it is destroying our law system and is exposing how law enforcement officers are treating citizens unfairly because of the color of their skin.

Here are some problems police brutality is causing within the law enforcement system. First, people want to defund the police this is a problem because our community needs law enforcement officers to stop crime, keep people safe, and enforce laws. Defunding the police would cost many people their jobs. It could lead to a increase in civilian injuries, crime, and violence. America would probably not be able to survive without the police. Next, it is hurting their reputation. People do not trust the police as much as they used to. A lot of hardworking men and women are getting a bad reputation not necessarily because of their mistakes but because of their coworkers. This is unfair to the police officers who are treating every citizen equlaly and now have to suffer the consequences because of the actions of racist and biased police officers. Last, people of color are scared of the police due to the actions of police brutality happening all over the country. Citizens should never fear for their life by a system that is put in place to do the exact opposite, protect them. Police brutality has caused many issues in peoples lives. For example, mental heath issues, PTSD of citizens that may have had encounters with officers that made them feel unsafe or morning over a friend or loved one that was taken by  a police officer. Fear of police officers is causing people to not use their voice and stand up for what they believe in. No person deserves to feel afraid of the people that are put in charge to make you feel protected and safe.

One of the other reasons police brutality is terrible is because it is showing how racist the law enforcement system is towards minorities. First, It is hurting minorities mental heath. After the George Floyd murder many African Americans have reported feeling trauma. Many minorities have said that they feel anxious when the police are around according to the Harvard gusset. This could even lead to depression especially if a family member was harmed or killed of police brutality. Additionally, It is showing how much more violent the law enforcement system is towards the minorities. For example the George Floyd situation the police killed even now he was defenseless. Did you know that minorities are three times as likely to be killed by the police. So many minorities are dying for no reason because of police brutality. Furthermore, they are not just violent towards minorities they also discriminate against them. Research shows that black drivers are nearly four times more likely to be pulled over according to NYU. 

To be simple the police just do not treat black people fairly. They racially profile minorities causing the minorities not to trust them. Police brutality is ruining our law system and is showing how truly racist the law enforcement system is. Police brutality is negatively impacting our enforcement system needs to take advocate for.
