The Comparison of Victor and the Monster in Mary Shelley’s Novel Frankenstein Essay Example

Throughout the development of English literature there are often times when rival enemies inadvertently share striking similarities and differences between one another, a situation clearly analyzed between Victor and the Monster in Mary Shelley’s captivating novel, Frankenstein. 

Victor and the Monster share a common characteristic. The Monster thinks his work is complete while Victor thinks his work is incomplete. Victor says, “Even now I cannot recollect without passion my reveries while the work is incomplete”. Also the Monster states, “My work is  complete. Neither yours nor any man’s death is needed to consummate the series of my being and accomplish that which must be done, but it requires my own.” The contrast between Monster and Victor is that Monster’s work is complete because he already did what he had to do while Victor was left behind. Another difference is successfulness. The Monster declares, “To ashes this miserable frame, that its remains may afford no light to any curious and unhallowed wretch who would create such another as I have been.” Also, “ Yet why do I say this? I have myself been blasted in these hopes, yet another may succeed.” Victor said. This means that while Victor is still want someone to be successful in a discovery, the Monster wants no one to be curious about science. 

Not only they have differences between them but also they share a few similarities. One of the most notorious one is that both of them want a friend. In the book Victor says, “I have longed for a fried; I have sought one who would sympathize with and love with me.” The same way the Monster declares, “But even so; the fallen angels will become a malignant devil yet even that enemy of God had friends and associates in desolation; I am alone.” Both of the main characters in the novel are seeking a friendship. They need someone to share their accomplishes with because they feel abandoned. Both Victor and the Monster believe they were capable of fame and recognition. “Once my fancy was soothed with dreams of virtue, of fame, and of enjoyment. Once I falsely hoped to meet with beings, who, pardoning my outward form, would love me for the excellent qualities which I was capable of unfolding. ” said the Monster. Likewise Victor commented, “I believed myself destined for some great enterprise. My feelings are profound; but I possessed a coolness of judgment that fitted me for illustrious achievements. ” This explains that both of them thought people could recognize them as well reputable persons but everything turn out to be antithetical.

Since both of them want a friend, and the monster thinks his work is complete while victor thinks his work is incomplete. Those are some of the main differences and similarities they have in common.
