President Herbert Hoover Essay Example

During the 1920s thanks to large consumerism in the United states was a time of economic prosperity but as many things in life things must come to an end. Following the end of the era of prosperity came an economic crisis. Years into the 1930s America experienced a great downfall in the economy during a period we now refer to as the Great  Depression. This was a time that was very significant in the aspects of historical events and historical people such as President Hervet Hoover who had a very large impact on the people, economy and politics during his term in the great depression.

Foregin relations during this time was one of the only many issues discussed then as now since that time was the period of WW2 and the era of communism. During the great depression there is a man associated with the Great Depression whose name is Herbert Hoover. Herbert Hoover was the 31st U.S. President of the United States.  He was a full believer in Laissez-Faire Economics Which was his motive and Belief throughout the Great Depression, which leads many to think that he is the main cause of the Great Depression. He believed an economy based on capitalism would self correct. He believed economic assistance would make people stop working. Today this can be compared to the stimulus checks and balances given during the pandemic many may state that because of the financial help given by the government it led to many choosing not to work and being only reliant on the government. He also believed business’s success would eventually reach the average person. Sadly Laissez-Faire Economics  Ideals were not effective against the Great  Depression. This sadly led to his defeat to  Franklin D. Roosevelt and his New Deal

To combat the Depression, Hoover tried a variety of strategies. He urged company owners to keep their employees. He gave a number of public remarks to instill confidence and calm people down. Hoover did not believe that the federal government should fix prices, control corporations, or influence currency values. These, he believed, would lead to socialism. For example, in 1929, he reduced taxes and signed the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act, which was designed to boost the minimum wage and assist farmers. The Depression was worsened by his dedication to a balanced budget. The states, according to Hoover, should provide for the unemployed. He was against excessive federal intervention. Before Hoover took office, the causes of the Great Depression were already in place. His concern for budget balance, while admirable, came at an inopportune time. Many Hoover's policies, although made with good intentions, backfired and worsened the great depression.
