Though an estimated 25 million people are affected by human trafficking the first globally coordinated conversation discussing it didn’t occur until February of 2020 during the covid outbreak. Though human trafficking has been a delicate subject to speak about being educated on trafficking is considered the most important factor in preventing and ending the problem worldwide. Human trafficking has become a growing problem, reaching unimaginable heights and there is very little assistance to prevent the issue and help educate the public who knows little more than the cliches of the issue.

The misinformation of human trafficking can be greatly noted as most of the population will believe that it is an issue that mainly occurs in other countries but 83% of sex trafficking victims are United States citizens. And according to Dr. Saisuree Chutikul, a member of the United Nations Office on Drugs Crime as well as numerous other organizations with the eradication of human trafficking as their goal, and to the growing issue she has answered that the education and knowledge of trafficking among people are key to beating human traffickers. 

While some forms of prevention have been in place to prevent assist those affected by human trafficking it has continued to be a grand issue. Some prevention and protection came in the form of propositions like Proposition 35 that would be passed in 2012, Prop 35 outlined a plan to expand the definition of human trafficking, increase the punishments for the offenses, impose fines, adjust the use of evidence in court, require law enforcement to be trained on handling the cases and place additional restraints on sex offenders. Prior to the proposition an adult was trafficked in any way the procurer could only receive up to five years but that was extremely rare.
