There are many different puppy breeds around the world to choose from. Some breeds are easier to care for than others, so it's important to look at each breed's qualities, especially if you are a new inexperienced owner. The best puppy breed for a brand new, first time dog owner is a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel because it is light in size, playful, easily trained, and friendly.

Many people may think that the quality of finding a dog that has a good lifespan is important, however this is incorrect.  A dog’s lifespan is dependent “on how you raise it and if it has any congenital problems” (Best). Although you may find a dog that has a lifespan of fifteen years, there is always a chance that the dog will pass away sooner from health conditions or it just dies at a younger age than expected. The quality of having a good lifespan isn’t a good thing to go by as you never really know when the dog is going to pass away. 

The first quality that the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel has is its light in size. This dog is shown to be a very “low-maintenance breed” (AKC) because of its small size. For a dog to be light in size, it tends to be around thirty five pounds or lighter. The size of the dog matters as smaller dogs are usually easier to care for than larger dogs. Smaller dogs also do not take up as much space as a larger dog might take (Best). This would be important for a first time dog owner especially if you live in a small apartment or house where there isn’t much space available, making caring for the dog less troublesome. 

Another important quality that the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel has is that it is very playful. This breed is “playful, but their energy level is manageable and they are easy to handle” (Best). A playful dog means they will run around outside, run after a ball, play with owners, anything that involves interacting with people in a very fun and entertaining way. Since Cavalier’s have high energy levels, “basic daily exercise is typically enough to maintain health” (Stregowski). 

This is a sporty breed which means they likely enjoy running after a ball and being active so it wouldn’t be hard for this breed to get in daily exercise, making it easier on the owner. 

A third quality that the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel has is that it is easily trained.  As the AKC staff once said,“The Cav is very trainable and open with strangers” (AKC). It is good to have an easily trained dog as they can learn new communication faster, making the owner's job of caring for it easier. This breed is shown to be trained very easily because it carries some of the traits needed to help learn skills quickly and smoothly.  There are some breeds that carry “characteristics that make them slightly more trainable than others” (US). Some characteristics that can make a dog easily trained is their intelligence, age, working dog genes, and focus (US). The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel has a good focus and is highly intelligent. A high intelligence greatly helps training as it can help the breed understand commands quicker. This is a great quality to have, especially for first time owners, because they will take less time to train and be less of a struggle to deal with. 

The last and most important quality that this breed has is being friendly. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is “gentle and affectionate” and it is “known for being adaptable and good with all sorts of people” (AKC). Friendly means being non aggressive, kind, and affectionate towards others. This breed shows to be friendly as it is adaptable with others and gets along with them well. This Spaniel also has a loving face meaning it “looks very sweet and has an affectionate appearance” (Stregowski). The quality of having a friendly appearance helps give off a warm and welcoming view. While looking at the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, you would likely have a positive reaction, such as saying ‘aww,’ but if you were to see a breed such as a pitbull, the reactions would be more negative. This is a nice quality as the dog is gentle and well with people so there would be no worries with taking the dog out in public fearing that it will hurt someone. 

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel has the qualities of being light in size, playful, easily trained, and friendly making it the best puppy breed for first time dog owners. There are many great puppy breeds for first time dog owners, however this is the best. This breed has many qualities that people look for in a dog, and they are very easy to care for. Therefore, no puppy breed is better for first time dog owners than the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.
