Empathy and Growing Up in To Kill a Mockingbird Essay Sample

The classic novel to Kill a Mocking bird by Harper Lee is set in a small sleepy southern town of Maycomb, Alabama. The finch children come to understand the world they inhabit differs from the true reality they live in. To overcome challenges they shed their childhood onto adulthood they understand empathy through Atticus's guidance. By learning to appreciate the value of empathy and growing up. 

Scout growing up consists of her knowledge and disappointment of the people in Maycomb. She empathizes with those who have been wronged and by Atticus, she learns and improves upon herself. "One time he said 'You never really know a man until you stand in his shoes and walk around in them.' Just standing on the Radley porch was enough (Lee 374). This Shows that Scout understands the connection Boo felt and how, in her mind, tormented him. 

Jem and Scout Learned about growing up and empathy at their own pace. Although, Jem starts to piece together why things are perceived as they are. Jim Faces this challenge while facing the fact of growing up. "It's time you start bein' a girl and acting right!" (Lee 153). Jem yells at her trying to label her the coward covering the affliction of the challenge of growing up. He starts to accept that the situation of their world will never be right in the place of true reality. 

While Scout and Jem face a difficult path, they overcome it by facing adulthood and what comes with it. Endearing what is thrown at them while holding their restrictions. By learning to appreciate the values of empathy and how to grow up.
