Healthy Relationships In Shakespeare's Romeo And Juliet Essay Sample

I do not believe that Romeo and Juliet are truly in love. Romeo and Juliet’s relationship progresses rather quickly and there is little to no understanding of each other. Juliet is acting on her own mothers words. Lady Capulet introduces the thought of marriage to Juliet but it is in the terms of Paris. After her mother has talked to her, Juliet now has this image in her mind of marriage and veers off the right path and decides to secretly marry Romeo. From my standpoint, I believe that if one person really loves someone they will not keep their initial relationship secret and will try anything for the relationship to work. Romeo and Juliet seem to act on only passion and passion does not mean love. In addition, Romeo seems to love Rosaline but right when he sees Juliet he decides Juliet was the one. This raises the question, what stops him from doing that again with another girl? Nothing. 

When Romeo and Juliet meet they do not know they are in opposing houses, and when they find out it seems to spark their passion even more. I believe that they like the feeling of something new and the thought of going against their parents wishes is exhilarating to them and it makes their relationship seem better than it is. I am also led to believe that their relationship is extremely fast due to the urge to marry, since they are at the ages when it is expected back then. With the pressure that Juliet feels at home and the passion Romeo feels towards everything, both of them act as an escape for each other and all of the potential issues are obscured by their fear of being alone. Furthermore, Romeo and Juliet are not truly in love and only like the idea of love and the idea that they can be rebellious and feel a sense of adrenaline when they are together.

One could argue that Romeo and Juliet will not die for each other if they do not love each other but I argue that they only die out of fear. That being said, Romeo and Juliet grow up too fast and want to be apart from their families, leaving only each other left, which justifies the fear they have if they were to be alone. In addition, with this strong attachment to one person, they feel that they can not live anymore without them since without a steady long relationship they do not understand that being together is not the only factor of a relationship. They both act in fear since they can not understand each other and only understand that their disregard for their own families left them with only each other. Without ever being alone in their life the moment they begin to feel a sense of loneliness they act on emotion and no longer see any reasoning.

Romeo and Juliet are unable to have a healthy relationship since they are both too preoccupied with what others would do if their secret got out. However, Romeo especially creates a toxic environment for this relationship. He claimed to be in love with Rosaline yet right when he caught a glance at Juliet, now she is his true love. Juliet is acting as a shield for his own deteriorating ego. Romeo was unable to get the initial girl he liked so he settled for the one who would give him a chance. Juliet had a separate “relationship” outside of her one with Romeo, that would be Paris. Following Juliet’s marriage, her parents have plans for her to marry Paris. With this constant second factor they both have in this relationship, they are unable to create a healthy environment. Furthermore, both of them also seem to be more interested in each other physically and less emotionally. They have yet to even get to know each other before getting married. Therefore, Romeo and Juliet have an unhealthy and fake relationship.
