The Giver Sameness Analysis Essay Sample

Sameness harms the community in many ways, but this is the most deleterious way possible. In the community, the government gives everyone an identicle house, clothing, profit, and more. No one is allowed to have a personal choice. Jonas states, “If everything is the same, then there aren’t any choices!” This quote supports my thesis that putting an end to personal choice in the community would weaken it. In fact, making wrong choices can actually benefit you more than harm you, since you will be able to learn from the wrong decisions and grow from them. Therefore, if people in the community can’t make their own choices, they will never be able to express their personality or be able to solve a problem hastily. Accordingly, having no individual choice will damage a community.

Sameness impairments the society more than it helping it. Jonas the main character becomes curious about the process of release, since his father was performing it on a twin. Thus, he asks The Giver to watch the process. In the community, people are taught that if someone doesn’t fit in, they must be Released and go live Elsewhere. After Jonas watches his father perform Release, he finds out that Release is actually the killing of someone “He killed it, my father killed it.” In our society there is no such thing as Release since it prevents people from making mistakes and eventually learning from them. If a person does something wrong once they probably won’t do it again. In the community, if someone does something against the law it is a transgression, after 3 transgressions they are released. Instead, we have different types of temporary punishments like paying a fee or going to jail. Making mistakes is a normal human activity that any living thing will eventually make, preventing it will lead to harm in the community.

Sameness will jeopardize the population. The Giver decides to share with Jonas his favorite memory, a memory of Christmas night where a family was bunched up around the tree opening gifts. The emotion that was presented in the memory, was love. “Jonas repeated it. “Love.” It was a word and concept new to him.” According to studies by ICDS, love is probably the strongest emotion known to mankind. In The Giver the people in the community don’t know the true meaning of love. Love can be found in friendships and family, if there is no love then the relationship between one human and another will be meaningless. Hence, if you can't feel the strongest emotion in the world, then you will never be able to truly care for someone, leading to problems for everyone involved.
