The foster care system is abusive, both physically and mentally, towards kids, causing health problems. One way the foster care system is abusive is physically. The physical abuse  in the foster care system is evident by this statistic, “By placing a child into foster care, the risk of that child being abused nearly doubles.” This supports my claim because it shows the likeliness of a kid getting abused is higher when they are in foster care. Another piece of evidence is “As stated by the American Academy of Pediatrics, children entering foster care have frequently suffered social, emotional, and medical neglect and physical abuse.” This quote supports my claim because it is by doctors who most likely see multiple cases of abuse. The physical abuse children receive in the foster care system is now being brought to the public eye.

Mental abuse is another way kids in foster care are abused. As stated by the Adoption Institute “One study of children in foster care, aged 2 to 14 years, identified nearly 50% had clinically significant mental health problems.” This supports my claim because a study was done and found ½ of the kids in foster care had mental health problems. Another piece of evidence is “Children who have been in the US foster care system are at a significantly higher risk of mental and physical health problems.” In conclusion, the foster care system is harmful to the mental well being of children.

Some people say foster parents are giving the foster kids shelter, so they should be grateful, but as studies have shown, ⅓ of foster kids are abused in their foster homes. Majority of foster families feel kids should be grateful, when in reality, that isn’t always true.

In conclusion, the foster care system is abusive, both physically and mentally, on kids in the foster care system. To solve this problem, we should make foster parents get more in-depth background checks, in order for kids to feel more safe in their foster homes.
