Picking a dog breed that is right for you and/or your family is very important. It especially can be overwhelming for first time pet owners. It is vital to pick a breed that has strong, standout qualities.  I believe Labrador Retrievers are amazing dogs for first time owners. Labrador Retrievers are great dogs because they have a good temperament, very trainable, and  loyal to their owners.

Labs are loved by many nationwide, however some people argue that Labs are too energetic. Labs are known to be very active dogs. This breed needs regular, daily walks and more intense activities. They enjoy playing almost all the time and being outdoors a lot. Active, youthful dogs take up a lot of time.  This wouldn’t be a good dog for new pet owners if they are not willing to put the same energy into caring for them. 

One good quality of Labs is that they have a good temperament. According to the Telegraph Online article “The most aggressive dog breeds named in new study, “Larger dogs including Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers and Lapponian Herders were found to be the most docile.” Docile means compliant and listens. Since this was proven during a research study that shows it’s very believable. Labs are overall easygoing and gentle. There isn't really anything bad people say about Labs. Everyone loves them.

Secondly, Labs are proven to be easily trainable. In Kayla Fratt’s K9 of Mine article, she quotes Labs as being “smarty-pants” and it takes them “fewer than five repetitions to learn a new command.” To add on to that even more they ranked seven out of one hundred thirty-seven based on intelligence. Based on all of this it doesn’t take very long to train your Lab to learn commands. They pick up on things faster than many other dogs. 

Lastly, the number one thing Labs are known for is being extremely loyal. The American Kennel Club recognizes them for being lovely family dogs. They are also ranked number one nationally. These dogs stick by their owners' side their entire lives. They follow you everywhere and just want to spend time with their owners. They truly love and protect their owners.

To conclude, I think Labrador Retrievers are the perfect dog for new pet owners. They are easy-going, adapt quickly to new things, and are their owner’s ride or die. When research studies and The American Kennel Club have nothing but positive comments and research this proves that they are great dogs. There are rarely any critical remarks. If you are new to owning dogs, your best bet is to own one. You won’t regret it.
