Essay Sample: Is Social Media a Great Thing

In the past, there were not many options to communicate with your friends or strangers. You can meet them and tell them about your day, or write them a letter, but not much more was done. Everyone lived their own lives and only themselves knew what was happened in their day. Times have changed. With the introduction of the internet, one of the first things that were done is to make it accessible for everyone to communicate with each other easier. After the simple text message communication, came the visual communication. This was much more powerful. It is more exciting to see something than to hear it. Of course, this resulted in the birth of social media, a place where you can see and show as much as you want to your friends, family, or strangers. Like most technology, it evolves, nowadays, there are so many web sites and apps that you can access to show or view other people’s lives. The question is, is this really a great thing? Is it better that we can now communicate visually rather than send letters or meet people?

Most teenagers that share pictures and videos on social media are just posting funny stuff, interesting things or basically whatever goes on in their day. Some more than others. This is not a bad thing, until it becomes harmful towards others. A lot of people that are active on social media post only the good stuff that is going on in their lives. They also use fake videos to show people how “perfect” their lives are. Furthermore, most pictures of women you see on social media are perfect bodies, perfect faces, usage of photoshop and completely unrealistic scenarios, these things make girls think that everybody is like that, and they should be like that too. And the boys expect nothing else from a girl than what they see on their screens. I think it is ok to keep people updated on your life, but it is not ok to be posting unrealistic stuff that might mislead teens into thinking that is how it should be.

Some social media is also used for buying and selling stuff. Some stranger’s posts something for everyone to see about selling something. People then talk to this random person and pay them for their product, which never arrives. Unfortunately, many people get scammed through social media. Just like in real life, people can still trick you or steal from you through the internet. Social media’s role until now, must be limited to messages and posts. No social media is developed enough to become a reliable market where you can trade, buy, or sell goods.
