Many people stared at the Berlin Wall with fear in their eyes. Hearts are broken, torn, and ripped apart knowing they will never see their families ever again. This all began after the defeat of Germany in WWII. The four countries that had fought in this war got a piece of Germany’s land, but due to their conflicting ideas about Germany, Germany was split into 2, East Germany and West Germany, but before construction of the wall began, what was it like to be inside of East Germany.

Even though people could just simply walk from East Germany to the West, the communist party started an institution of the secret police, also known as the Stasi. The main goal of the Stasi is to report and imprison citizens who disrespect the communist regime. Not only did their people go through political oppression but East Germany’s economy was awful. The reason was due to them extracting resources instead of focusing on fixing the state of Germany.

Although I have told you what was happening to East Germany during that time, I haven’t told you who came up with the idea of the Berlin Wall. The person who came up with the idea of the Berlin Wall was a man named Walter Ulbrich. The way Walter Ulbrich made his plan come to fruition was by convincing Nikita Khrushchev, the president of Russia, to protect the German Democratic Republic by making the Berlin Wall, even though his real motive was to boost the economy of Russia.

Since four countries had split Germany amongst themselves, their over conflicting ideas made it more difficult for them to come to a compromise between each other, most notably Russia. The only goal that Russia had during the time was to remove Great Britian, France and, the United states. Their plan was to starve them out by creating blockades, similar to the anaconda plan during the Civil War in the United States. As soon as they moved forward with their plan they failed due to allies dropping food crates from helicopters to Germany, many people called this the Berlin air lift. The real breaking point of Russia was the lack of civillians in East Germany. Over 3.5 million had fled to go to the West due to their high economy and job opportunities.
