Do you think kids become adults when they hit the age of 21? Well, that question has been debated for years. Many people say kids become adults when they are 21, but others say that kids need to be responsible, self-sufficient, and have a fully developed brain in order to be adults. Age can’t decide whether you are an adult or not, everyone goes through different experiences so maturity might come to some before others.  A child becomes an adult when their brain is fully developed, mature, and can take the right decisions in life.

First, according to the author of “What the brain says about maturity”, “some regions of the brain and their systems have not reached full maturity until the early or mid-20s”. Reaching the full maturity of your brain is an important part of being an adult.  Also by reaching full maturity of your brain, you will get better planning ahead, anticipating the future consequences of one’s decisions, controlling impulses, and comparing risk and reward skills. Next, this is not only said by people, but neuroscientists have proven this point now that they have more available technology to work with. Lastly, being self-sufficient could also influence whether being an adult or not.

Second, kids become adults when they are self-sufficient and don’t need other people to help them. Being self-sufficient is very important when it comes to being an adult. This skill requires a lot of effort, responsibility, and decision-making. Some kids even start to use this skill when they are very young by being smart with their money, working, and making good decisions. Not everyone can do this, and some of the jobs they take are considered for adults. Still, many adults live with their parents who help them in decision making, help them with college assignments, and even support them financially according to the author of “A parent’s role in the path to adulthood”. Lastly, forming a family can be a sign of adulthood.

Third, the author of “A parent's role in the Path of Adulthood” mentions that “The age of first marriage and birth of a first child, are often perceived as adult markers”. Being able to make important decisions, like, marrying someone or having a child could mean that you are responsible and mature enough to go out and experience more things in life.
