The brain is involved in a number of activities necessary to life that helps your body mature, develop, and grow.  Some of these activities the brain does, only happens when you are asleep, so it is very important that you sleep well.  There are many positions to sleep, but there are two main ones that regulate your sleep routine. 

Throughout the time you are asleep your brain will cycle repeatedly through two different types of sleep: REM sleep ,rapid-eye movement, and non-REM sleep.  The first part is the non-REM sleep.  There are four stages that the non-REM sleep is composed of.  The first stage is right in between, you falling asleep and being awake.  The second is a light sleep when the heart rate and breathing, maintain the same speed and then immediately afterwards the body temperature drops. The third and fourth stages are in deep sleep.  It is believed that when you are in non- REM sleep it helps you with your ability to learn and improve your memory.  When your brain cycles into REM sleep your eyes will start to move rapidly behind your eyelids.  Brain waves are still similar to those when you are awake.  Then you start to dream, when this happens your body gets temporarily paralyzed.  These cycles happen about 4 or 5 times in your sleep.  

There are two main processes that regulate sleep: circadian rhythms and sleep drive.  These are called built-in sleep controls.  There is a biological clock in your brain that is controlled by circadian rhythms.  The rhythms are controlled by light cues.  That is why whenever you wake up it is light outside.  People with total blindness have trouble sleeping because they cannot see the light and neither can the circadian rhythms.  Sleep drive is pretty much a signal in your body that tells you when to sleep and when to not sleep.  It is just like hunger except that you cannot force whenever you like it too.  By taking a thirty minute nap in the middle of the day, it can throw the sleep drive off.  Then it will take longer for you to sleep at night.

First of all, if you miss a night’s sleep or have a poor night’s sleep, then whatever you learned that day you have a high possibility that you will forget it the next day.  No sleep or poor night’s sleep will weaken the brain’s adaptation to input.  Which means how well the brain is developed.  Researchers believe that sleep may encourage the removal of waste products from brain cells. That is something that seems to occur less efficiently when the brain is awake.  Sleep is vital to the rest of the body too. When people don’t get enough sleep their health risks rise.  Symptoms of depression, seizures, high blood pressure, and migraines worsen.  There are many important connections between your health and how much sleep you get.
