Theme of Independence in Children of Blood and Bone Essay Sample

Socrates once said “To find yourself, think for yourself.” People achieve independence through endless struggle with patience, passion and goals. However, independence is not easy for some people and it takes time to master or complete it. People suffer independently when others limit their chances of success. When people recognize their strengths, they grow. The independence of the  children is different and difficult to maintain. In tomi adeyemi’s novel Children of blood of bone, Amari teaches readers that self-confidence and power can be found through independence and courage. Throughout the book, Amari was suffering from her values ​​and power, and when she met zelie, the world around her became clear from her perspective of who she was.

Before Amari’s coming of age moment, The author shows Amaris' weakness through  fear of  disappointment. Amari was very protected and afraid of everything but life. She was really afraid and hurriedly made all her decisions. She was first introduced to readers when Amari found out that her handmaid Binita had been murdered at the feet of her father. When Amari escapes, she encounters zelie, who she sees as “[A] copper-skinned girl[who] shakes with fear so visceral it leak[ed] into [her] skin” (58) 

Zelie immediately saw Amaris’ dread, she had little confidence in her being able to live up to her expectations, as Amari wore it. Amari's character development begins at this point in this conflict. During Amaris's journey with Zelie, she discovers that no one protects her anymore, and she must do this alone. Amari would often think about the “shame [that] heats down on [her], making [her] want to crawl into [herself] as the man raises his arms again” Amari’s internal conflict was one of the most difficult things she had to go through. Throughout amari’s chapters, reader’s learn that she is an open person and very curious about the outside world, but before, during and after her coming of age moment she still has internal fights that she must put up with everyday. 

Amari endured to develop in the course of the book, she had tough instances and a couple of roadblocks. Her toughest roadblock became her coming of age second while she needed to kill her father to higher her life. After that, Amari has become more unbiased and confident. Yet after killing the king of Orisha, she had found out she became greater effective on her own. As amari and her father have been combating in a pit of anger and hatred she tells herself “I can rid Orisha of its greatest monster, [and] abolish the source of it pain.”(513) She knew she had enough strength to be Lionare, and all she had to do was accept it for herself. Amari was able to understand who she was and what she was capable of while overcoming her mental obstacles. After fighting with her father she “plunges her sword, without hesitation” and says to her father “Don’t worry i’ll make a far better queen” (514) Later, Amari discovers a power she never thought she would have, realizing that if she used it in times of anger and pain, she would be able to overcome her fear of what is happening.
