Love is defined as a profoundly tender affection for another person. It is such a passionate feeling that it can also be a tool to force one into thinking differently. William Shakespeare uses words, contrasts, specific details, and internal and external conflicts to show Romeo’s perspective on love.

Shakespeare uses literary devices in the play to demonstrate Romeo and his perspective on love. By using words, Shakespeare shows Romeo’s perspective on love. For example, in the play Romeo says, ¨With love’s wings did I o’erperch these walls, for stony limits cannot hold love out.¨ These words show how nothing can hold back Romeo and his love. Romeo’s character lacks stability due to him being in love with the idea of love.

Shakespeare makes the play exciting for the audience by using contrasts. Romeo’s perspective on love is shown by using contrasts between other characters and Romeo himself. For example, Mercutio says “If love be rough with you, be rough with love. Prick love for pricking, and you beat love down.” Mercutio thinks that love is a joke and a foolish game, so he mocks Romeo for believing in something so childish. He brushes off Romeo’s feelings and tells him to just hurt love back if it hurts him.

Imagery is used to make the reader visualize an image using their imagination. Romeo’s perspective on love is shown by using imagery. To illustrate, Romeo says “So shows a dove trooping with crows, as yonder lady o’er her fellow shows.” to describe Juliet’s beauty. Beauty is what stands out the most to Romeo, so he thinks that Juliet is the prettiest girl among the other girls he has fallen in love with. He is obsessed with the idea of being with her, and for him she is the only thing worth living for.

The power of love can manipulate and control someone. Love can be dangerous, but humans are willing to take those risks because they love each other.
