Romeo And Juliet Maturity Analysis Essay Example

Maturity is an act of becoming a grown adult, and as far as I can tell Romeo and Juliet only aspire to be one. Juliet, in the eyes of her parents, seems to be quiet, reserved, and innocent. On the other hand Juliet has a secret relationship with Romeo then proceeds to marry him in the span of only a couple of days. All of this information is shared with the nurse but once the nurse seems to disregard Romeo after his banishment, Juliet strives to become independent. Juliet's maturity has now flourished through her act of drinking the temporary poison and weighing her options even before she carries through with the plan. Juliet has now made decisions on her own and acted like an adult through her actions in a relationship, marriage, and independent decision making. Unfortunately Juliet has not grasped on to the main factor of maturity, and that is to not rush any decision since it could impact the rest of your life. This is demonstrated when Juliet kills herself once she sees Romeo dead. In addition, Juliet is able to understand when her emotions need to be taken into consideration in her decisions yet she remains impulsive throughout the play. Juliet said that she was willing to give up her family in order to be with a boy she had only just met. 

When meeting Juliet, Romeo was introduced as thoughtful and passionate. This idea of Romeo has drastically changed throughout the play since he has now secretly dated and married a girl he only just met and killed two people apart from himself. Romeo seems to only care about girls when he is at the party yet is extremely immature when immediately discarding Rosaline, his so-called love, for Juliet, a girl he only glanced at. In addition, Romeo’s maturity seems to increase after he gets married to Juliet and sees no reason to fight Tybalt. Unfortunately Romeo continues to be impulsive, like Juliet, and he kills Tybalt out of an act of passion. Romeo starts off very mature and seems to be the voice of reason, telling people not to fight. As the play progresses he starts to veer off that path and he starts to become more and more immature as he decides to kill people merely due to his emotions.

Both Romeo and Juliet act dramatically when receiving the news of Romeo’s banishment. Romeo says it is like death, and Juliet says it is worse than her own cousin dying 10,000 times. They are fully motivated by what happens to each other and this impacts them negatively. When Romeo sees Juliet dead he kills himself due to his attachment to her, and she does the same. Romeo and Juliet became dependent on each other when they got married since if their secret were to ever get out they know that they would only have each other. Even when Juliet drank the poison she knew that she was discarding her family and Romeo was the closest thing to family at that point. Romeo and Juliet both start out very mature then show some signs of maturity but mainly spiral out of control and both end the play (and their life) in an extremely immature way. They both saw themselves as mature but in reality they just wanted to feel grown up and went about it in the wrong way. Furthermore, they both seem to be emotionally mature in the sense that they know what their emotions are telling them, but their executions veer them towards an immature path.
