Have you ever thought about social media and what it does to your mental health? Social media has been draining students since it came out. Students feel necessary that whatever they decide to do, it needs to be accepted by other people. Or whenever they are having fun, they need to post it online for other people to see. Although social media can connect family and friends, it shouldn’t be allowed in school. Social media can lead children into danger, lowers communication and grammar skills, and can cause depression and other mental illnesses.

One of the strongest reasons why students shouldn’t be on social media at school is because they can be led into danger. The Cyberbullying Research center reports in 2010, 20% admitted to being cyberbullied or have cyberbullied before. Now, that's only the people who admitted to it. Many teens and children also have been shown something that they probably shouldn’t have seen at that age. At a young age, that could even scar that child for the rest of their life. Schools shouldn't encourage students to go onto social media for that reason alone.

Another reason is that your communication and grammar skills can decrease while being on the internet or social media. Everyone knows that usually when you text, you don't use full sentences and grammar. You use things like “LOL” and “OBV.” Students will apply that to real-world situations and usually start using that slang out of social media. That could decrease their grades and how they communicate with people. The whole reason why kids are at school is to learn and grow on grammar and communication skills. Not lower the skills they already had.

The last reason is that social media can cause depression and other mental illnesses. Dijana Damjanovic and Isabel Dayman reported that 60% said they get worried when friends have fun without them. Also, 78% said it was important that they understood their friends “in-jokes.” Social media can indeed help them connect with friends and communicate after school hours. Students are already stressed enough with their studies and their home life. They don’t need unnecessary drama added to their life. Social media makes students feel bad about themselves and add other things that they don’t need in their life. We should keep social media out of school grounds.

We don’t want to lead our students into danger, or lower important life skills and make them even sadder. That's why students shouldn’t have social media on school grounds. We wouldn’t want to do something that would cause students harm, stress, and more. Schools are supposed to focus on learning, not drama. What if social media never existed in the first place? How would the world be in today's time?
