Domestic Violence Against Women in Russia (Essay Example)

Every 40 minutes, a woman is killed by domestic violence in Russia. 1 in 5 Russian women are physically abused and about 14 thousand are killed every year because of domestic violence. This is not considered a problem in Russia. Russia has eased the penalties for a domestic abuser. If the abuser doesn’t break any bones, and does not commit abuse more than once a year, then they can be sentenced 15 days in jail, or only pay a $500 fine. Isn’t it absurd to see how domestic violence is normalized, and barely receives any consequences for such a horrifying crime. Domestic violence is becoming the social norm, and it will soon be too late to do something about it. 

Because this has become such a normal thing in many lives, it is considered to be okay, but it is the opposite. Many women now believe that domestic violence is normal and is something that should happen in marriage. “If he hits you, he loves you”. This is an increasingly common phrase used to justify domestic violence. This is no way any person should ever live. Living in fear of their spouses, unable to seek help until they are dead. 

In February of 2017, Russia decided to decriminalize domestic violence cases. Policemen no longer report to any emergency calls about domestic abuse until the victim is dead. Women must suffer in pain and agony as there is absolutely nothing the police will do. Russia claims it is an “interference of family life”. But in reality, the Russian government is just providing a canopy for the abusers. A safe shelter, free from harm and a place to escape. Giving protection to people and things, just like the decriminalization of domestic violence cases provides. Allowing domestic abusers to roam is a violation of the rights women have, and simple human decency. If women are not assured that they are safe under the Russian law, then their personal rights are under a threat.
