Consequences of Haste in Romeo and Juliet Essay Example

Star crossed lovers fall in love and tragically kill themselves only three days later. The play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare is about the family feud between the Montague and Capulet families. The two star crossed lovers from each side of the feud fall in love, get married and kill themselves only three days later. The Consequences of Haste lead to Romeo and Julites death.William  Shakespere shows the consequences of haste by the rush of their big decisions as they rushed their marriage and their plan for Juliet drinking the potion. They rushed it and couldn't let Romeo know in time before he found out That Juliet looks to be dead. 

The first way that William Shakespeare shows the consequences of haste is the way that Romeo and Juliet fall in love too quickly. Right after the big party and the capulet’s Romeo and Juliet meet outside of her window they talk about how their names don't mean anything about their love  to each other and that their love is so strong for each other. In act 2 scene 2 Romeo says to Juliet  “let them find me here: My life was better ended by their hate, Than death prorogued, wanting of thy love” (2.2). Romeo is saying here that He would be ok being killed by a capulet for his love of Juliet. This is what they are saying to each other on the same night that they met. The consequences of this is when they get married. Romeo goes to Friar Lawrence to try and get married Friar says this “But come, young waverer, come, go with me, In one respect I'll thy assistant be; For this alliance may so happy prove” (2.3) Friar lawrence is saying that it would be great for them to get married to break the feud. Which is a consequence of haste because now they will get married too quickly. 

The second way that William Shakespeare shows the consequences of haste is when they got married. William Shakespeare shows this in act 3  Lord Capulet talks with Paris and decides that he will marry Juliet on thursday. “Things have fall'n out, sir, so unluckily,That we have had no time to move our daughter:Look you,” (3.4) Lord Capulet says here that science tragedy has happened, they need to get Juliet married and he needs Paris to do it. However, she is already Married. The next morning Lady Capulet breaks the news to Juliet that she will be married on Thursday to Paris,  Then Juliet replies to Lady Capulet saying “ He shall not make me there a joyful bride. I wonder at this haste; that I must wed Ere he, that should be husband, comes to woo. I pray you, tell my lord and father, madam, I will not marry yet;” (3.5). So Juliet is saying that she won't get married to Paris because she's not ready to get married. Although she can't get married to Paris because she’s married to Romeo. That's How Williams Shakespeare shows the consequences of haste through the Lovers Marriage. 

The third way that William Shakespeare shows the consequences of haste is when Juliet took the potion to make herself seem dead for 48 hours. In act 4 scene 3 Juliet is forced to get married to paris. To avoid this she goes to friar Lawrence and demands a potion that she will take on the morning of the wedding.  Friar lawrence agrees to give her the potion “Let not thy nurse lie with thee in thy chamber:Take thou this vial, being then in bed,And this distilled liquor drink thou off;When presently through all thy veins shall run A cold and drowsy humor, for no pulse Shall keep his native progress”. ( 4.3)  After this Friar Lawrence has a letter to be sent to Romeo But it doesn't make it there in time. Balthasar sees Juliet presumably dead, he rushes over to Romeo and breaks the news before the letter gets there. “Then she is well, and nothing can be ill: Her body sleeps in Capel's monument,And her immortal part with angels lives.I saw her laid low in her kindred's vault”. (5.1) This means that Romeo thinks Juliet is dead from the message that he was given. 

As many problems happened leading up to Romeo and Juliet’s Tragic deaths. That was all because of the ways that William Shakespeare showed the consequences of haste throughout the play.  As they didnt think before acting and doing things too quickly is what ultimately leads to their deaths. This play reminds the audience to never act so quickly and to always think through life. William Shakespeare does a very good job at showing the consequences of Haste throughout his play Romeo and Juliet.
