Brutus vs Antony Speech Essay Example

Monologues are often seen as long and boring but in truth, hold a lot of importance. In Shakespeare's play  The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, we examined two important monologues by two different characters. Brutus presented a moving monologue by using pathos and ethos but it wasn’t effective enough to appeal to the audience. Antony in seek of revenge applied ethos and logos in his persuasive speech. Antony connects to his audience by showing his true emotions which made him victories in convincing the audience. 

Brutus started off strong in his speech by showing the audience he cares about them and giving them a reality check. For instance, he argued that Ceaser with all his power will take advantage of those less fortunate. Brutus tells the crowd “Had you rather Caesar were living, and die all slaves, than that Caesar were dead, to live all free men?” (3.2.22-23). This line impacted the crowd of Romans because they saw Caeser as their leader, the idea of them being slaves by Caeser's rule gave them a new perspective of him. Additionally, Brutus made sure the crowd understood that killing Caesar was for the sake of Rome. Brutus says “Not that I loved Caser less but I loved Rome more”. (3.3.21-22.) With this Brutus is saying that even though Caeser was loved by many, Rome was more important and therefore a sacrifice had to be made. In contrast to Brutus, Antony used Caeser for what he was and not for what he could have been. 

Antony was a friend of Caesers and like any good friend you would want to highlight the good in your friend.
