“The Border” is a story about a wealthy, privileged girl of Mexico that is forced to move and adapt to a new American culture in New York City. During her new life, she realizes that even though she was contempt by some racist Mexicans, they eventually respected her upon discovering that she came from a wealthy family. But in the United States, she faces no acceptance. While she was an honor student in Mexico with a dream to help other people, having no familiarity with the English language causes her academic performance to immensely suffer. She feels as though she is being blended in with the ignorant teennagers who don’t care about being educated and are “pregnant, violent, and racist”. With no one to sympathize with her, she falls into a state of intense depression, and forgets about who she wanted to become with an environment that doesn’t favor her. Eventually, she realizes how ungrateful she was in Mexico, and soon feels ashamed that she had spent her time in America being depressed and refusing to accept her new reality. Seeing the broken people around her, she decides to make a change in her life, by trying her hardest to learn English and gain skills in challenging academics. She also joins communities to learn more about her new culture. (“trains, buses.). After a while, she begins to feel passionate about her new world, and continues to bring change to those who struggle with a different perspective on being accepted by the world. When she once lived to feel accepted by her ethnicity and skin color to “fit in”, living in a new place where she was being denied that acceptance was what forced her to realize she didn't want to be ignorant and truly help other people, but instead be unique.
