"I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter" Literaly Analysis Essay

A Person’s Identity is a chain made up of many links such as materialistic possessions, family, traditions,accommodation and education . According to Oxford’s dictionary, morality is defined as ”principles concerning the distinction between right and wrong or good and bad behavior”. Materialistic possessions, and family can influence a person's identity and this is demonstrated in the novel “I am not your perfect Mexican daughter” by Erika L Sanches.

For instance , in the novel, Julia the leading protagonist deceived her parents about where she was going one night and later returned intoxicated, which brought punishment from her parents thus building her morality as a young isolated rebel, for instance, in the novel Julia’s developed bad manners.

Materialistic possessions came into play in the form of literature. Julia is an avid bookworm which sparked her interest in college, leading her to pursue a career in writing. However due to her parents opposition in her career choice, she was unable to pursue this path during this time due to her parents usings her sisters insurance money on giving her a quinceanera she didn't want instead of saving it for college fund, leading her to miss classes this guiding her morality to what some might refer to as bad karma affecting her identity as a whole.

Family values can greatly affect a person's inner and exterior identity, Julia’s family being both isolating from the exterior world were still highly social with close family members. Julia on the other hand was isolating and unsocial with most keeping herself hidden from the world only opening up to close friends and relationships, this being a complete contrast from her younger sister Olga who was overly social with family members which led her to feel Olga was the favorite one of the two. This led to constant conflict within Julia and her mother’s expectations to be more like her sister. Family values can cause a person to change, be it positive or negative, it’s a chance every parent takes when raising a child with their own identity.

In conclusion, A person's identity can be shaped by all their external factors , such as family and friends , more importantly how they feel or react to those external factors that truly develop their identity. This is evident with Julia’s own journey as someone different within her own family.
