Into the Wild Essay Example

While reading the novel Into the Wild the main character Chris McCandless is very distinctive, he sticks out like a sore thumb. In the novel it talks about a hike named Chris McCandless, he lived in a very materialistic home. Chris did not want to live a life like his family did when growing up, and decided the best choice would be to go nomadic. Chris McCandless is well educated and an adventure-driven person but was not arrogant.

Chris McCandless is thought out to be an idiot for setting out on a journey to the Alaskan Wilderness. If this topic was deliberated we would come to the realization that staying alive for 113 days in the Alaskan wilderness with low resources should display how quick-witted he was. When being realistic if another human being was to go on this adventure like this with the limited resources that were provided; basic clothing, personal care items, camping supplies, a tent, a small collection of his preferred books, ten pounds of rice and used rifle. Many of us would make it as far as he did.

McCandless was not only well educated but he was not an arrogant person's character. Chris lived a tough life when he was younger. Having an abusive, violent, and resentment relationship with his parents. Walter McCandless and Billie McCandless lead a lifestyle that didn’t seem to catch Chris’s attention for him to live it. He hated it so much it made him leave on an expedition to Alaska. Ignorance is maybe the best word to describe the situation. Chris was overconfident in his ability to successfully live in the wild with low resources and on land where it’s entirely for winter. The signs he had for him not to go on this trip were given to him, they were in plain sight but he denied to keep on his journey.

“Don’t settle down and sit in one place. Move around, be nomadic, make each day a new horizon. You are still going to live a long time, Ron, and it would be a shame if you did not take the opportunity to revolutionize your life and move into an entirely new realm of experience.” - Adventure seeker for Chris, it knew he would be the right person to seek for. Chris dropped everything to go on an adventure to the wilderness, he risked his life, he lived in a van, was low on supply to live but he still manages to make the trip up to Alaska. Many people like Chris live unhappy circumstances and they begin to initiate the change into their life. This was Chris's turning point, taking this trip was to change his life for the better for him to be happier and to be in a better place. His last few words speak for themselves. “ I have had a happy life and thank the lord. Goodbye and may God bless all!” -

To summarize, who was Chris McCandless? What type of person was he? Greatly educated, venturesome, and a little ignorant. Overall he was many things buts thing he was not was stupid like it may be said. Chris McCandless inspired many people to live their lives and find themselves. Find true happiness, “ It is the experiences, the memories, the great triumphant joy of living to the fullest extent in which real meaning is found. God, it’s a great tone alive! Thank you. Thank you.” - Jon Krakauer
