Stress. Depression. Anxiety. These are three mental problems that all students across the United States suffer from. These problems can be addressed due to homework, too many assessments, and high amounts of pressure and expectations. To solve these common problems, there is a easy and calm solution. Want to hear it? Listening to music. This might seem wrong, but music actually helps reduce stress, depression and anxiety. However, there have been multiple debates stating that music doesn’t help kids learn or it affects their academic learning. This debate is important because it can either benefit or distract American children’s learning. After viewing multiple articles, studys, facts stated by professionals and research, we can conclude that music helps students work productively and learn without distractions.

Fast Task Completion

One of the reasons why students should be allowed to listen to music in school is because music allows people to complete their tasks quickly and efficiently. In “The Power of Music, Tapped in a Cubicle” by Amisha Padnani, Dr. Lesiuk had done some research and had concluded the following analysis and predictions: “Dr. Lesiuk’s research focuses on how music affects workplace performance. In one study involving information technology specialists, she found that those who listened to music completed their tasks more quickly and came up with better ideas than those who didn’t, because the music improved their mood,” After reading this research, we can conclude that music affects people’s mind and their work ethics in a positive manner with multiple benefits. This all is important because we can conclude that music is used without disadvantages. This can relate to our claim since people learn and complete daily challenges and assignments with no problem because of music.

Doing Better on Tests

The second reason why students should be allowed to listen to music is because kids do better on tests. In “Here’s Proof Music Can Do More Than Just Make You Feel Good” by Rebecca Adams, there was an experiment conducted using a wide range of different recordings. The experiments conclude the following: “Each time, those preferred a type of music --- whether it’s classical, pop or jazz--- performed better on cognitive tests after hearing that type. The tempo of a given song, as well as its major or minor tonality, also had an effect on how happy and alert listeners felt (what researchers call “arousal”), which in turn influenced their performance,” After further analyzing this experiment, we can see that music can affect people’s mood which would then affect their academic scores and results. This all is important because then we can see that music can positively impact students. This all related to our claim because music allows children to excel academically without distractions and obstacles.

Creative Thinking

The third and final reason why students should be allowed to listen to music is because the music lets children think creatively. In the article “You Listen to Music At Work, and It Alters Your Mind. Yes, Seriously” by Thor Benson, Teresa Lesiuk (associate professor of music education and music therapy at the University of Miami) states the following analysis and thoughts: “She said that about “90 percent of the time” people have positive experiences when listening to that music often produces “mild, positive moods.”Being in that frame of mind can be helpful for getting work done,” and “It’s shown that when you’re in that particular mood state, you take in more options, you don’t narrow your focus, and that is beneficial to creative problem solving,” After analyzing these statements by Teresa Lesiuk, we can see that music can allow students to work in a positive environment and this can benefit multiple real life skills such as creative problem solving and thinking creatively. This all is important because it is relevant to our claim because music can help children develop skills that might help them a lot in the future.

According to the sources and analysis above, we say that kids should be allowed to listen to music while working. Multiple people however, disagree with our thinking. In “You Listen to Music At Work, and It Alters Your Mind. Yes, Seriously” by Thor Benson, multiple people state that “Listening to music at work can make “absorbing and remembering new information” more difficult” However, according to the 2012 Time Magazine, an article states the following: “However, research has also found that listening to music at work can make people more productive,” This is relevant because we can see that most of the reasons on why we should not listen to music have been eliminated and we can now see that our claim is more evident because most of the sources we have used are now supporting our claim and thoughts.

Conclusion

In conclusion, after reviewing multiple sources, evidence, stats, research, and articles, we can conclude the following: Kids should be allowed to listen to music because it helps them positively. Some examples are: It makes people work more productively, it lets kids develop life skills that will help them in the future, kids do better on tests and assessments, and people can finish tasks quickly and efficiently. Just imagine, what if kids all across America would be allowed to listen to music. Would our education grow? Can we draw more conclusions about what helps kids academically and what doesn’t?
