What does it mean to really be wise? A person would need true knowledge as well as the experiences to have the wisdom to support their advice. The novel To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee shows true wisdom coming from one of the main characters, Atticus, as well as the older generation throughout. All throughout the novel, children go to Atticus for the advice they need. He always knows the right thing to say whenever he has one of his children come up to him for help. The wisdom that he shares helps the children to grow as an individual as well as helping them to be a better person.

At the beginning of the novel, Jem and Scout went through ups and downs and they needed someone that is stable enough to help them through the hard times. That was Atticus. Atticus explains to the children that,  “ You never really understand someone until you consider things from his point of view… not until you climb into his skin and walk around in it” (Lee 39). This means that people must understand others in order to know what they are really feeling as well as fully understand what the other is going through.  He always knows what to say whenever someone needs his help and advice.  He explains that “[He] wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand.” (Lee 115).  Atticus knew that the children needed to know what real courage is in order for them to grow as an individual. In conclusion, Atticus is one of the smartest people in the book that always know the right thing to say whenever someone needed him.

Later on in the book, there was an argument about killing mockingbirds as well as the Blue Jays. Throughout this part of the novel, Atticus stayed level headed and kept a clear head while everyone else was chaotic and confused. Although people were all over the place in their emotions, Atticus reminded everyone that they can, “shoot all the blue jays you want, if you can hit ‘em, but remember it’s a sin to kill a Mockingbird" (Lee 94). After he explained that they can’t shoot the Mockingbirds, but the blue jays are fair game. He made sure that everyone understood the rules on bird hunting and gave some of his background on the topic to make sure that everyone got his point. The town truly listens to him and knows that he will always do what is best for the town. From knowing the laws on bird hunting to knowing everyone's personal life in Maycomb County, he cares and will always be there in the better interest of the town.

All in all, the novel To Kill A Mockingbird is full of wisdom coming from the main character, Atticus. He is the only character in the novel the truly understands the rest of the characters to their full extent. Atticus always knows the right thing to say when one of his children need his help as well as when a neighbor or colleague needs advice with anything. He is the right-hand man for anyone that comes his way, and he has always to put others in front of himself. All of his actions have positively affected the others around him and has had an overall positive outcome throughout the entire novel. Finally, Atticus had the opportunity to represent an African American man and while everyone did not think that he was doing the right thing by representing him, he did not care one bit. Although he was called very rude racial slurs, he never backed down and stood up for what was right. Atticus showed true perseverance and knowledge all through the novel that made him extremely wise, and his actions explain why everyone trusted him with their personal problems. If there were more people like Atticus in the real world, the world would be a much wiser and generally more ethically correct.
