Does it ever come to mind that the traits given aren’t our own? John Lubbock writes, “Your character will be what you yourself choose to make it.” While admittedly morals can shape how someone goes about their choices; nature vs nurture sets one’s moral. Lubbock’s statement is false traits are a result of both nature and nurture.

Nature vs nurture is a debate that’s been discussed for years, it discusses whether human behavior is determined by the environment, or prenatal. It’s the base of this argument because what happens in society will always have an effect on people that being said, nurture is what shapes people’s characteristics. People often ask what makes them themselves, in a scenario where identical twins are separated and one’s a modeled citizen and the other is not, the twin’s genes make them identical but, their different environments make them separate in terms of character. Research shows that how people are brought up is how they tend to behave. In an article, Mairi Levitt states, “Participants also saw themselves as shaped by the people surrounding them, starting with their parents, or those who brought them up. Several mentioned the illness and/or death of a parent during their childhood and older respondents talked about separation due to the second world war.”

Character traits are naturally based off characters on social norms. Social norms are a collective representation of what is acceptable. Social influence occurs when a person's behaviors are affected by others intentionally or unintentionally. Social influence can take many forms and can be seen in peer pressure, persuasion, and conformity. In a Ted Talk, Sam Richards explains that most people make personal decisions but, in that decision, there’s an influence that leads people to make certain decisions.

Functions, expectations, and norms shape certain world influences. The world influences people’s choices from what people eat to how people handle "their" issues. A person's, culture consists of the beliefs, behaviors, objects, and other characteristics common to the members of a group or society. Culture is an important shaper for people’s personality, it influences how one lives, learns, and behaves.

Society is a big influence for traits, it controls what someone becomes and how they become it. Concludes that the outside influences are stronger than the individual. That people are embedded in a social structure leading most personal traits to correspond with each other.
