“The time machine”, H.G Wells’ novel takes us into the future with our main character, The time traveler. Wells shows us the descending of the human race over time, lead by social hierarchy and capitalism. The time traveler’s invention, the time machine, allows him to go back and forth in time by exploiting the fourth dimension. The time traveler goes forward in time and stops at the year 802,701, “I looked more curiously and less fearfully at this world of the remote future. In a circular opening, high up in the wall of the nearer house, I saw a group of figures clad in rich soft robes. They had seen me, and their faces were directed towards me.” (Wells, The time machine 4)

The time traveler encounters the Eloi, childish, white, small and soft-sounding creatures. The Elois are harmless and have a fruit-based diet. The time traveler thought when he first landed in the future that humans were so involved in technology they would be way ahead of him, “You see, I had always anticipated that the people of the year Eight Hundred and Two Thousand odd would be incredibly in front of us in knowledge, art, everything. Then one of them suddenly asked me a question that showed him to be on the intellectual level of one of our five-year-old children” (Wells, The time machine 5). The Eloi  are foolish and aren’t smart,

they seem to have no feelings, either. The traveler describes the Elois’ reaction after seeing their friend drown: “ I was watching some of the little people bathing in a shallow, one of them was seized with cramp and began drifting downstream. The main current ran rather swiftly, but not too strongly for even a moderate swimmer. It will give you an idea, therefore, of the strange deficiency in these creatures, when I tell you that none made the slightest attempt to rescue the weakly crying little thing which was drowning before their eyes.”(Wells, The time machine 4). The Traveler proceeds to save the Eloi and makes friends with it. The Eloi grew so soft due to their social class they don’t have feelings anymore, the traveler even discovers the Morlocks, ape-like creatures who feed on the Eloi, are the ones behind all the machines he saw. The Morlocks are the laborers who are responsible for the way the Morlocks are living. They are the poor, uneducated class that is essential for the Eloi’s existence.

The higher class eating the lower’s class work is portrayed through the Eloi’s fruit diet, and is some way, the Morlocks are avenging through eating the Elois. This is the result of capitalism over the years. The laziness of the upper class and the works of the lower class. Though, they are still related. The Morlocks feed and dress the Eloi and in return hunt them, it’s a relation that has been going ever since capitalism existed. The time traveler loses Weena, his friend, to a forest fire after being pursued by the Morlocks. He travels in time millions of days to find himself in an apocalyptic earth where the sun is dying and it is bitter cold. If it hadn’t been for social class, humans might have survived and developed greater in technology, and maybe survive till the end of the planet. Humans should work together as appreciating communities where everyone’s job is recognized, and we are not based on eating each other’s flesh. The traveler begins his trip back to the present to find his friends, who still don’t believe him. He decides to go back to the future, maybe to save Weena, maybe to learn more of how the planet came to it’s end, or leading the Eloi and Morlocks to peace and civilization. The time traveler has not returned ever since.
