ADHD is a disorder that keeps you constantly moving around and makes it harder for people with the disorder to pay attention. 12.9% of men and only 4.9% of women are diagnosed with this disorder. It can affect children as early as 3 years old and it can continue into adulthood. The symptoms for boys and girls are different. For boys they are usually overly active, can’t focus, and are physically aggressive. The symptoms for girls include having low self-esteem, difficulty paying attention, and verbal aggression. The main causes of ADHD are genes, abuse of alcohol or drugs during pregnancy, brain injury, and low birth weight. You can treat the disorder with medication, therapy, or education and training, whichever one would suit them the best. (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, n.d).

There was a research study that took place on adults with ADHD at Zürich’s psychiatric university hospital.  The researchers in the study are Carlos Canela, Anna Buadze, Anish Dube, Dominique Eich, and Michael Liebrenz.The research took place on August 18, 2016 and concluded on September 27, 2017. They were trying to figure out how the people at the university hospital coped with their symptoms using skills and strategies before they decided to get treatment. They used social, organizational, attentional, motor, and psychopharmacological skills and strategies. (Canela, Buadze, 2017).

Some participants were contacted by phone, letter, or by their treating physicians. 32 people participated in the study in total. There were 14 female and 18 male between the ages of 25 years old or less and 46 years old or more. To be in the study you had to be at least 18 with ADHD and also be fluent in German. There was no diagnosis since it was mainly focused on what strategies and skills were used before they got treatment. (Liebrenz, 2017).

The researchers conducted an interview to gather information on what strategies the participants used to help with their disorder. They used an interviewer that the participants didn’t know so they wouldn’t get a biased answer. During the interview they were asked questions about what kind of strategies and skills helped them. Organizational and psychopharmacological skills were identified at the beginning of the interview while motor, social, and attentional skills were identified at the end. (Buadze et al, 2017).

The results show that the skills that were pointed out in the interview could be sorted into different categories. Organizational skills was the most common skill that was used due to the fact that it helped them focus and be more productive. Motor skills such as physical activity was also found to be the most helpful. Attentional skills were used to help them pay attention while they were doing tasks. Social skills let them make new friends and since they had a lot of energy, they were seen as funny. Some used psychopharmacological skills such as cocaine, alcohol, nicotine, caffeine, etc. to calm themselves down. (Buadze, Canela, Liebrenz, 2017).

The way the researchers added what the person said in the interview directly made it a good research. It shows how they feel and why they use those skills for their benefit. To improve the research they could have had more participants so they could get more information to see what others do because people do things differently. It would also be better if they had more people around the same age instead of more older people. This could impact society by showing what kind of skills people with ADHD do before they get treatment.This research impacted me because my friend has ADHD and I never understood exactly why he was always interrupting or always wanting to get up out of his seat in class. It helped me realize that ADHD can affect you in many different ways and you should be patient with the people that have it.
