Transcendentalism by definition is an “Idealistic philosophical and social movement that developed in New England around 1836 in reaction to rationalism.” It is found in regular day-to-day existence, in the music you listen to, and in the books you read. "This is me" sung by Demi Lovato and Joe Jonas from the famous film Camp Rock and the story Self-Reliance composed by Ralph Waldo Emerson communicate similar troubles, remaining consistent with yourself and discovering what your identity is.

This is me and Self-Reliance go hand in hand in the topic of staying true to yourself. The song states “Do you know what it is like to feel so in the dark? To dream about a life where you are the shining star even though it seems like it is too far away I have to believe in myself, it is the only way." Ralph Emerson stated, “And we are now men and must accept in the highest mind the same transcendent destiny and minors and invalids in a protected corner, but guides, redeemers, and benefactors.” Demi Lovato and Ralph Emerson speak about the fact that if you listen to others you are placing yourself in the wrong direction yet believing in yourself is the only way to steer you out of the wrong path. Do not be afraid to trust in your inner voice.

Discovering your identity is a major factor in the melody and story. Lavato sings “Now I have found who I am, there is no way to hold it in, no more hiding who I want to be, this is me.” Ralph proposed “Accept the place the divine providence has found for you, the society of your contemporaries, and the connection of events. Great men have always done so, and confided themselves childlike to the genius of their age, betraying their perception that the trustworthy was seated at their heart…” Both pass on the message that if you do not discover who you are, there is an opportunity life will not be as significant as you might expect. Not realizing your actual self is keeping you away from living upbeat and free like others in this world.

All in all, without disclosing to you that these have transcendentalism, they provide data to whoever is listening and reading. It is still around in modern-day society. The central idea of the melody and story is talking about how an individual conducts themselves. The more distracted you are from others, may cause you have no thoughts of your own to rely on. Make every second count, regardless of who tries to stop you.
