The purpose of this speech was to persuade the nation to change their ways. To do better for the starving children around the world, and for the animals on the planet. Severn Suzuki who was representing the Environmental Children's Organization appeared before the united nations at the Earth Summit in Rio 1992 with an appeal on behalf of all children.

The structure of this speech was effective, Severn Suzuki’s introduction was appealing on how a group of twelve-and thirteen-year-olds was trying to make a difference. Vanessa Sutti, Morgan Geisler,Michelle Quigg and herself all raised money and traveled 5000 miles to tell adults they must change their ways. Severn Suzuki is fighting for her future and generations to come. The ending was also powerful referencing how they were taught from small to share, to help, to not fight with others, to clean up their mess and to respect others, but it seems as if those rules are now thrown out for the adults of the united nations. Severn Suzuki brought them all back to reality and showed them why they started what they are doing. She left them with encouragement to “make your actions reflect your words.”

Throughout the speech Severn Suzuki used techniques suited for this persuasive speech by building trust (ethos) “I’m Severn Suzuki speaking for (ECO) the Environmental Children’s Organization, “appealing to the emotion of the audience (pathos) “My dad always says, “You are what you do, not what you say.” Well, what you do makes me cry at night,”  and also appealing to the audience with a great understanding of the arguments she made (logos) “Here, you may be delegates of your governments, business people, organizers, reporters, or politicians. But , really, you are mothers and fathers, sisters and brothers, aunts and uncles and all of you are someone’s child.”

This speech was successful and showed much evidence of planning. Severn Suzuki informed the crowd of the disaster in which we have brought upon our countries such as the holes in the ozone, the chemicals in the air, fishes with cancer, and all animals vanishing forever because of our lack of precautions. She targeted her life about the possibility of her children not experiencing the great herds of wild animals, jungles, and rainforests full of birds and butterflies. She admonishes the people of the united nations to stop abusing the country. “If you don't know how to fix it, please stop breaking it!”  Severn Suzuki also spoke about the homeless and was a virtuous representative for those whose cries went unheard.

Severn Suzuki used rhetorical devices in her speech such as allusion”Losing my future is not like losing an election, or a few points on the stock market,” and others such as repetition, and anaphora.
