In the passage titled Oliver Twist the author, Charles Dickens, incorporates dialogue into his story to reveal different aspects of the characters. The dialogue reveals the inhumane nature of the masters and the innocence of the boys. James Joyce, author of  A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, uses dialogue that functions to show the character of Stephen and the other boys at the school. Through the dialogue, the reader sees that Stephan does not fit in due to his lack of confidence and that the boys often make fun of him. The dialogue in the story, Oliver Twist, reveals the inhumane actions of the adults and the innocence of the boys while the dialogue in A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man reveals Stephen’s lack of self confidence and how the other boys treat him. 

Through the dialogue in the passage, Oliver Twist, the cruel actions of the adults and the innocence of the boys is revealed. According to the text, it states, “‘Please, sir, I want some more[...] ‘For more!’[...] after he had eaten the supper allotted by the dietary[...]” The dialogue between the characters revealed that the boys were not fed well by the adults who were in charge of them. The text also states, “Oliver Twist has asked for more[...] That boy will be hung[...] I know that boy will be hung.” The dialogue between the adults revealed their cruel and inhumane nature because they believed that Oliver Twist should be hung just because he was hungry for more. The boys’ innocence is also revealed by the dialogue because it shows how the boys got punished for being hungry and politely asking for more food. 

The dialogue in  A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man reveals different aspects of the characters, Stephen and the other boys at the school. As stated in the text, “Tell us, Dedalus, do you kiss your mother before you go to bed?[...] I do[...] I do not.” The dialogue between Stephen and Wells revealed Stephen’s lack of confidence when he changed his answer after the other boys laughed at him. The dialogue also reveals how the other boys do not accept Stephen and always enjoy making fun of him. According to the text, it states, “Sick in your breadbasket[...] your face looks white[...]” The dialogue between Stephen and Fleming helped reveal the Stephen’s feelings  about his current situation at the school. The use of the phrases, ‘sick in your breadbasket’ and ‘your face looks white’, in the dialogue between the two characters suggest that Stephen was feeling upset and worried. Therefore, the dialogue reveals Stephen’s lack of confidence and how the other boys treat Stephen.  

The dialogue in Oliver Twist and A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man functions to reveal aspects of various characters throughout the passages. In the passage Oliver Twist, the dialogue throughout the story reveals the cruelty of the masters and the innocence of the boys. It also reveals the inhumane actions of the masters when they refuse to supply more food and provide consequences for asking. The dialogue in the passage, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man,  reveals Stephen’s lack of confidence when interacting with his peers and how the other boys treat him. Through the dialogue, one can understand that Stephen’s lack of courage and self esteem provokes the other boys to amuse themselves by making fun at him. Therefore, the dialogue in Oliver Twist reveals the harsh nature of the masters and the innocence of boys while the dialogue in A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man reveals Stephen’s lack of confidence and how his peers treat him.
