My name is Bayleigh Parker. I am seventeen years old and graduated from Benton High School three weeks ago. After graduating, I have been pondering about what makes me, me. How have my experiences impacted me throughout my life and most importantly, what has helped shape me into the person I am today? I believe that there are many components, major and minor, that go into what shapes a person. For myself, there are three main parts of my life that have shaped me into the person I am today.

The first and most important part of has shaped me into the person I am today is being a military child. My dad has been in the Air Force for twenty plus years. Because of his job, my family and I have moved a lot. I have lived in a total of eight states, including Wyoming, California, Hawaii, Nevada, Alabama, Colorado, Utah, and Louisiana. From all of the moving, I have learned how to be adaptable and not to be bothered by changes. I have also learned how to introduce myself; plus, I can communicate with people that I don’t know. This is important because you are always going to meet new people furthermore you have to know how to communicate.

Another thing that has helped shape me into who I am is being a big sister. I have two younger brothers Austin, who is two and a half years younger than me, and Blake, who is five years younger than me. With being the oldest child, I am the one who is responsible for most circumstances. When my brothers and I were younger there were times that my parents would tell us to clean up our toys and oftentimes I was the one who was responsible to make sure all of the toys were put up correctly. Because of this, it has taught me responsibility. Having two brothers has also taught me to be caring, protective and loyal to the people I love. My friends describe me as loyal and/or caring. I believe that I am this way because I am an older sister.

Running has also helped shape me into the person I am today is. When I was in fourth grade my mom signed me up for a running club; I fell in love with running and have been a runner ever since. I have run cross country and track for eight years. Over the eight years, I have competed for five different schools throughout elementary, middle, and high school. Along with that, I have competed in four different states. While doing track I have competed in many events including 400 meter, four by 400 meter relay, 800 meter, four by 800 meter relay, 1600 meter, 3200 meter, and the distance medley. Running is physically and mentally challenging. Because of this, it has taught me that things can get hard, but you have to push through it. It has also taught me that you have to work hard to improve and to achieve your goals. I am hard working and have a positive outlook for most situations and I am this way because of what I have learned from running.

These experiences and life lessons are some of the many things that have helped shape me into the person that I am today. It is hard to pinpoint everything that shapes a person as there are major and minor parts of one’s life that happen and can help shape them into the person they are. Major and minor influences can affect personality and how one may accomplish everyday tasks. Everyone has their own specific experiences that help shape them into the person they are. With me, the three most important things that have helped shape me into the person I am today is being a military child, an older sister, and a runner.
