The book, A Raisin in the Sun was mainly centralized on the main characters. The books about how a black family goes through struggles after a family member's death. It shows the hardships that a negro family would have to go through during that time, of segregation and racism. Many of the minor characters had impacts on the direction of the plot. Characters such as Joseph Asagai, Mr. Karl Linder and Travis, each played an important function in the play.

Racism is widely presented many times in the play especially when Mr. Linder was introduced. He wanted to convince the youngers not to move into the house because it's in a mainly white area. Mr. Linder clearly wants this as he says, “ it is a matter of the people of Clybourne Park believing, rightly or wrongly, as I say, that for the happiness of all concerned that our Negro families are happier when they live in their own communities“(Hansberry, 65). He tries to convince the youngers that segregation is in their best interest. This heavily weighs in the plot because the house is in a way their first step in going through with their individual dreams.

Of the minor characters, Travis had a major role in the development of the story because as being Walters and Ruth's son, their decisions are influenced by him. Toward the end of the play, Walter was planning to make him and his family look inferior to  Mr. Linder.  it was the only way for him to accept the bribe and get money for not moving into their house. When Mr.Linder came to meet Walter for the negotiation, Travis was told to leave the room. Mama stopped him and says, “ no, Travis you stay right here and make him understand what you doing, Walterlee” (Hansberry, 147). Then, after Walter changed his mind and stood up for him and his family. He decided to continue moving into their new house.

Of the several side characters' Joseph Asagai must be the most influential in the play. His connection to Beneatha brought him in the story as being a college student from Nigeria. While in a conversation with beneath he says, “ Then isn't there something wrong in a house in a world where all dreams, good or bad, must be dependent on the death of a man” (Hansberry, 39). This quote by far is the most important in the play because not only foreshadows the ending of the play but also makes the main point which the most characters are missing. Their dreams shouldn't be focused on insurance money but should be focused on their ability to overcome them.

The main characters were surely focused on in the play, but like every story, the side characters always influence the outcome. Several minor characters have a major impact on the story. As shown, Joseph Asagai shifted the plot of the play, he showed what the youngers that their dreams shouldn't be dependent on the willy harris’s insurance money. Mr.Linder represented the struggle that a black family would face in such a racist time. And Travis’s presence influenced Walters decision to stand up for his family and go forth with buying the house.
