The year is 1775 George Washington is appointed Commander of the Continental Army Despite having little experience in commanding large, conventional military forces, his leadership presence and fortitude will aid him in the coming year. He gazes across his formations he see’s indiscipline men with no influence nor the ability to delegate or lead, something must be done he thinks to himself he sets forth to lay the foundation for what will be the greatest fighting force this world has ever seen, over the next few years the Continental Army starts to come together standardized Units will come to fruition, noncommissioned officers will have a duty not only to country but to the men they lead. Infantry regiment would have set number of companies and have NCO’s for them Rank structure would be used, the NCO’s would be identified by their epaulet for both rank and branch. Under the command of General Washington Major General Friedrich von Steuben serving as the Inspector general would develop regulations for the order and discipline of troops which would become the Core of the Noncommissioned Officer.

Valley Forge

By 1777 the Continental Army was in shambles the winter had set in and troops we’re not equipped for this while across the country clothing lay unused in depots the soldiers of the Continental Army grew hungry as food had ran out, supply lines cut by the British the winter would become Washington’s greatest enemy losing men to sickness and desertion. In February the Baron himself Friedrich von Steuben would arrive at Valley Forge with his vast knowledge of Military affairs he would train troops the basics of drill formations, movement, proper care of equipment and Marksmanship. “All through the training, Steuben never lost sight of a major difference between the American citizen-soldier and the European professional. He early noted that American soldiers had to be told why they did things before they would do them well, and he applied this philosophy in his training program. His trenchant good humor and vigorous profanity delighted the Continental soldiers and made the rigorous drill more palatable.”

Conclusion

It is my option that if Friedrich von Steuben had not shown up at Valley Forge we would have not taken victory in the American Revolution to think that the rules and regulations he set forth over 244 years ago are still followed to this day show what kind of leader he was his ability to blended traditions from the French, British, and Prussian armies into a uniquely American institution his way to words to inspire troops are still lessons we can take after to this day.

“The hour is fast approaching on which the honor and success of this army, and the safety of our bleeding country depend. Remember, officers and soldiers, that you are free men, fighting for the blessings of liberty… that slavery will be your portion… if you do not acquit yourselves like men.”
