I could not let anyone distract me from doing my job considering it required a lot of laborious work. My feet were exhausted and swollen, with large red blisters between my toes. Going to work everyday was a pain, for my back pain interfered with my posture.

As I woke up this morning, I looked in the mirror hung up on the blank white wall across my bedroom. Dark circles under my eyes, swollen red cheeks, and pale skin made me look like a vampire who had just woken up from a terrible nightmare. Sweat was dripping on my forehead onto the newly painted parquet floor and my wet underarms created sweat marks in my shirt. I felt like I had come to my end, I couldn’t do it anymore.

Dragging my feet back to work again, I felt my instincts telling me something exciting was about to happen. As I sat down in my old rusty chair, a heavy basket full of letters was put on my small desk. I opened the lid of the weaved basket, and the first thing I saw was my letter written to Mariana hidden between two white envelopes. In this very moment, all of my pain suddenly disappeared and my eyes were glistening with tears of joy. I immediately grabbed the letter and put it in the non-censored basket. My mission had come true; my letter was being sent to Mariana.

I got home and went straight to bed. I didn’t even care to take off my black suit and put on my pajamas, for I was too exhausted. My sleep that night was not very comfortable either as I couldn’t close my eyes a single minute. My body started sweating, especially my forehead. Yet a half hour later, my body cooled down again to a normal temperature and I stopped sweating. My heart rate started to slow down, but then a minute later, my heartbeat started racing back up again. I tried to cool myself down, so I got up and drank a glass of sparkling water. Then I went back to bed.

I decided for myself that I should quit my job, for it demanded too much time and effort. “My mission had already been accomplished, so what’s the need to wake up early and stay up late every work day?” I told my mom.

My mom responded, “Sweety, I am so proud of you that you have finally decided to go back on the right track. I hope you came to realize that that job of yours is destroying your health.” It felt like everything was going well; my health started improving after a week already and the dark circles under my eyes had almost disappeared.

One afternoon, I returned home from my new job as a printer and saw a young slender lady with long brown wavy hair standing in front of my house door. She turned around, and her big smile made me feel like the sun broke through the clouds. I could see her dark brown eyes reflecting the bright sunlight from ten meters away. I quickly walked towards her and recognized her face. It was Mariana.

As I welcomed her into my small house, she took out a small box wrapped in orange foil. My chest started tightening up, and my eyes were watering. She opened the small box and handed me the small present. The perfume was called “Scent de Bois-Eau de Parfum” brought all the way here from Paris to Argentina. I thanked her and slowly removed the black spray top from the pink bottle. I could smell the floral fragrance of rose buds and white woods. As I looked on my arms, I suddenly saw hives appearing everywhere. My eyes were quickly reddening and I felt nauseous. I fell to the floor and I couldn’t catch my breath anymore; my heart stopped racing.
