Does Technology Make Us More Alone? Essay on Modern Technologies and Harm They Bring to Us

Technology is an essential part of our life; but, is it separating us and making us more alone? The recent tech news has been focusing on the issue of technology caused isolation because many experts are coming out with new effects and findings of technological isolation. Technological isolation is a significant issue because it isolates us from half and probably the main part of our lives, including friends, family, and work, and we’re wasting it on technology, especially considering the time we spend our phones and computers. Humans have grown to be more lonely and separated from society as technology develops because of the technology’s ability to give us a false sense of connection and by separating us from social events and limiting our minds to just certain thinking.

Technology, despite being the one thing we are the most dependent on, it is making us more alone by giving us a false sense of connection. The creators of technology who intended it would unify people more and get them to be more connected are arguing it did the opposite. Mrs. Sherry Turkle, who spent most of her working life, creating and advancing technology, even once made the face of the "wired" magazine due to her work regarding advancing technology was one of the people who came out saying that technology was a real problem.

Mrs. Sherry Turkle uses the phrase “Connected, but alone” to emphasize the idea that technology makes us feel that we are connected by social media, but inside it is making us more divided and lonesome because it does not give us the opportunity to bond or talk freely, make mistakes, and be who we are rather a message which could be deleted or interpreted in another way. Nevertheless, a poll shows that people think that as technologies advance, the more lonely and lonely we become. A poll shows that out of the people who voted 67% of them agreed that technology drives us apart more than it unites us and one of the voters commented saying that “It takes away the opportunity to actually communicate properly like humans are meant to.” People ignore the fact that technology takes away the meet and talk part of our lives replacing it with face time, texts, and online chat rooms which is a good thing but it is taking out the main thing.

Technology could also make us more alone by separating us from social events and limiting our minds to just certain thinking. Technology another ability is that it will separate us from our social life because it gives us more of the real-life work online which won’t allow people to go out, meet people and live their usual lives. A recent study shows that 51% of the United States population prefer online shopping rather than go to the store, which shows how technology affected us, there was a time where you go to a shopping place with friends and family but that is done through a 5 minute of button clicking.

Besides, people now do not like to get out of their comfort zones and explore and make new friends and ideas, and the cause of that is technology because our little devices are only connecting us to the people we are most like not the people who challenge our ideas or beliefs. “It is an effortless way to connect with the like-minded people. You are just a single click away from an incredible number of such people.” Said a website about the importance of technology but what it does not tell us is that we will be limited to a certain box and the less chance we have to think and challenge our ideas and beliefs.

People might think technology did not do that much effect of the human to human interactions and relations, saying that technology-enhanced it rather than causing isolation. In an article, the author says “It is an effortless way to connect with the like-minded people. You are just a single click away from an incredible number of such people. Regardless of location and religion, social networks are helpful in reviving and preserving relationships with other people.” The information presented is true, there is no denying that, but the effects of this apply when people understand how to use technology while keeping their lives and not being isolated from society. Humans now need to understand that those good qualities from technology are earned when we do not use them to isolate us from our lives and society especially with family and friends.

In conclusion, technological isolation is a big issue in the current world because it means separation of humans from their lives due to their addiction to their technological devices. Technology has made us more isolated in society by giving us a false sense of connection and by separating us from social events and limiting our minds to just certain thinking. Although technology helps up with a lot of things, but we are losing our human like qualities. If in the future we want to restore we have to start limiting our use of technology when we are forced to rather than that we should work on connecting with each other, also if we could do more connecting and nice things to each other to restore our lives to where they were.
