To whom it may Concern,

Ever since I was in elementary school, I knew that I wanted to study abroad when I got to college. It was just a question where to go. Should I go to Paris as I watched the Olsen twins visit when I would watch Passport to Paris? Or Barcelona were I watched the Cheetah Girls strut through Museums? Watching movies like these when I was younger encouraged me to choose a college where I knew I would have access to a Study Abroad Program. I have always loved to travel and have dis-covered that I am able to learn so much more when I can truly experience a culture that is different than my own. In terms of studying, I know that it is more beneficial to explore the culture and language that I want to learn about first hand rather than just reading about it a textbook. While I study abroad, I can get the life experience of traveling and pursue my education at the same time.

Therefore, I have decided to study Spanish this summer at Universidad Nebrija in Madrid, Spain. Spain is a European country that is rich in Spanish cul-ture and history, but also has a growing scientific and medical field. These are the characteristics that drew my attention to this program. I am majoring in Biology as well as minoring in Spanish, so to know that Spain has both things I am passionate about has encouraged me to study abroad there. By participating in this immersive program, I hope to gain the skill and confidence to speak Spanish more often as well as better.

It has always been my passion to be bilingual since I learned in 7th grade that Spanish is the second most widely spoken language in the United States. Soon, the United States will be one of the leading Spanish speaking countries in the world, so I think by learning Spanish now I can get ahead of the curve. I want to do every-thing I can to make sure I can communicate effectively with as many people as pos-sible. Knowing another language will open doors for me in my field of study and my social life. Medicine is widely practiced everywhere in the world, so being able to expand the amount of people I can connect with is incredibly important to me.

I come from a low-income, single-Parent household, so to receive the Kim-bler Study Abroad Award would alleviate the financial burden and make this expe-rience more enjoyable. I should be selected to receive this scholarship because I am a dedicated student. I work hard for what I want, and I am also devoted to helping my community thrive. I hope that I will be able to use my experiences abroad to give back to my community in some way.
